Certification for Charters

According to the Education Commission of the States, 40 states, along with the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have enacted charter school laws. Of the total of 42, 16 require that all charter school teachers hold certification with no exceptions; 22 require that charter school teachers hold certification with some provisions, and only four allow charter school teachers to document expertise by other means.

According to a recent poll, 68% of charter school non-renewals and closings in Broward and Miami-Dade counties are related in part to certification, out-of-field and/or NCLB Highly Qualified Teacher issues.

Within the state of Florida alone, charter school growth has exceeded expectations at ___%. Charter schools, as public schools, are tasked with ensuring their instructional staff are appropriately certified for their assignment and meet the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) guidelines for Highly Qualified Teacher designation. Within the traditional public school environment; district administrators are tasked with assisting, verifying, and monitoring the certification, out-of-field, and Highly Qualified status of their teachers.
